Good question, Anne. But, with good training, the director learns that the true Director is the Holy Spirit. The human agent only acts as a mirror, and communicates is sensed regarding "directions" in the person's life.
In the end, the directee must decide for him/herself what is the best way to live. It is not for the director to dictate this, although such used to happen in religious communities, at times, where the director would tell the directee what was God's will. That is not the way we do it today.
