: I enjoyed this thread between you and April, John, and found myself, with April, wanting to nuance the meaning of passivity. For, if anything, it seems to me that Jesus' was not passive, but obedient, and that's not quite the same. In his obedience, he accepted what was inevitable, but persevered in loving intentionality. Somehow, the emphasis on radical passivity needs to include these virtues: obedience (blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it), and love. Then, yes, que sera sera.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
my clarification: there are "passivities" which are nontransformative and saying "let it be done to me" must always be coupled with "according to Thy Word" was intended to cover precisely that virtue and i think Nouwen would agree
even "obedience" must be heavily nuanced in order to affirm the radical freedom with which God gifted humanity --- and i think of Ignatian discernment processes and the Jesuit spirituality of AMDG and of the three humilities and of our choices in matters not having to do with sin, etc
catholicism is, itself, heavily nuanced---safe bet that those of us here in this forum share basic presuppositions and don't really need to get caught up in semantics---ergo, the primary utility of such a thread as this is for the edification of visitors on matters esoteric versus exoteric
just thinking out loud and no safer place to do that in the cosmos than ShalomPlace!
peace, indeed
