these were great observations; both Thomas Moore and Richard Rohr have also contributed much to our understanding regarding the soul as distinguished from body and spirit
the confusion Sam points out is real and the implications for rediscovering these teachings in our tradition and as grounded in scripture are profound---i recommend Rohr's "Awakening the Soul" audiotape series, too ... request it at your local Catholic Bookstore
