Eckhart PUSHED THE ENVELOPE and almost got burned at the stake BUT he confounded his inquisitors with a craftily and artfully articulated neo-latonic triad which always successfully distinguished between: this is true metaphorically versus this is true anagogically versus neither is true/both are true unitively. Neither Eckhart nor Juan de la Cruz tore the apophatic experience of out the context from within which it was birthed. Once the hierarchy had given him a hearing, he passed his oral exams with flying colors. (This is NOT to suggest that he was otherwise always dealt with by superiors in Christian charity, anymore than poor Juan).
