: Is mastubation A mortal or venial sin?
dz,
"A venial sin is an act that is not fully consistent with an orientation toward God and Christian morality......A sin is considered mortal if (1) the act was seriously sinful, (2)the sinner knew it was seriously sinful, but 93) did it willingly with full awareness that it was a rupture with God, the world, and the self."
"Inside Catholicism," p. 76, text by Richard P. McBrien
Also, the following excerpt is from the Catechism of the Catholic Church.....To read the text in full, go to Yahoo and type in the words "masturbation catholic church." One of the
entries revealed will be the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
"2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."[137] "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."[138]
To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social factors that lessen or even extenuate moral culpability."
"Catechism of Catholic Church"
Therefore, as noted in the official statements above, moral culpability is dependent on many factors.
I would like to add a few questions for additional consideration:
What is my motivation?
Am I learning to be comfortable with the gift of my body?
Will my explorations lead me, at some point in time, to greater intimacy with my spouse?
Is anyone, including myself, being hurt in any way by my actions?
