Well, I know this thread is not for everyone, but I just can't deny the importance of the pentecostal gift of tongues in my own life.
I received this gift through my involvement in charismatic renewal in the Catholic Church in about 1973, and it has been a companion on the way ever since. I'm no longer involved in pentecostalism (since 1975), but this gift suggests itself several times a day.
When I give utterance (under breath, of course), I find that it opens my heart, clears my mind, and frees my intuition to discern the leadings of the Spirit.
It also seems to be a marvelous bridge to contemplative prayer. In fact, I am inclined to say that it IS a form of infused contemplation, especially in its spontaneous manifestation.
Let's hear from others who have experience with this one way or another.
Peace. Phil
