A Christian Critique of Adyashanti's Book, Resurrecting Jesus
Book Review by Philip St. Romain, M.S., D. Min.
In this work, Catholic author and spiritual director, Philip St. Romain, provides a substantive critique of Adyashanti’s book, Resurrecting Jesus: Embodying the Spirit of a Revolutionary Mystic. He notes Adya’s respect and admiration for Jesus, and the difference an awakening to the love of Christ has made in his life, but takes strong exception to his intent to radically reinterpret the message and meaning of Jesus’ life and teaching. Where mainline Christian churches regard Jesus as the only begotten Son of God, Adya holds that Jesus’ true revelation was that all humans possess the divine nature as he did. St. Romain counters this proposition by noting the many ways in which it is Adya, not Christianity, that has misunderstood the Gospel. The review concludes by noting some of the negative spiritual consequences of Adya’s teaching on this topic, and takes issue with author Cynthia Bourgeault’s enthusiastic endorsement of this work.
